The jetties

The origins of the Saguntine industry started in 1900 with the foundation, by the Basque businessmen Ramón de la Sota and Eduardo Aznar, of the Sierra Menera Mining Company (CMSM), dedicated to the exploitation of iron ore in Ojos Negros (Teruel) and Setiles (Guadalajara) and its export by sea through its shipping company. The chosen destination to ship all the mineral and build an entire industry around it was Sagunto.

The Movement

Between 1900 and 1907 the railway was built and the use of the port began 6 km from Sagunto. The railway line would link the mines and the port, separated by 205 km, giving rise to the population nucleus of Puerto de Sagunto.

Blast Fournace

It began to be built in 1922, when 1800 workers were already working, and it was designed by the engineer Frank C. Roberts, but it did not start producing until 1926, when it launched its first steel casting. It was part of a set composed of three steel ovens, a coke battery and a rolling mill. It came to produce more than 100,000 tons of steel per year. Its current image is the result of a remodeling in 1962. This oven is shut down definitively in 1984.

 Households

Industrial growth makes Sagunto an important focus of attraction for emigrants. The core of the Port is being born and part of the immigrant population is based on it. The company itself, and also the private initiative, favor the population settlement ‘at the mouth of the factory’.

 Sanatorium

Built in 1949 by Altos Hornos de Vizacya. Destined to the attention of the workers of the steel mill, the Sierra Menera Mining Company and the nearby companies. It was a center of reference in terms of facilities (it had operating rooms and all the technical innovations of the moment) and initiatives for occupational health. It was in use until 1985. Today it functions as a civic center with various municipal facilities.

Apprentices school

The history of the Apprentice School has been intimately tied in the city and its steel-mining factory. It was part of the educational project of the factory, initially tried to enroll the first children of the workers since 1912, and later I assumed the function of guaranteeing trained workers. It is already 1966, with 192 students, when the inauguration takes place in its current location, and at this time, around 1989, is when the school passes into the hands of the Ministry of Education with the name of IES Eduardo Merello.
